Night Edition

Mini crosswords where a word set cold pays triple.

Quick mini crosswords set in brass type on an old newspaper's night shift, against a clock you feed with right answers. Type a word before any of its letters are filled and it's stamped EXTRA for triple points, so every clue is a bet on how sure you are.

How to play Night Edition

Tap a square or a clue to pick a word, then type the answer on the brass keyboard (or your own keyboard). Tap the same square again, or the ⇄ key, to switch between across and down. A word is checked the moment its last letter is in, and every answer gives letters to the words that cross it.

Set it cold: a word with none of its letters filled yet is stamped EXTRA and pays ×3 points and +8 s. A red dot marks every clue that can still go cold. Cold sets in a row ring higher and higher.

The clock: one clock runs for the whole edition. Each word you set adds 3 s, a cold set adds 8 s, and a printed page refills it. A wrong word costs 6 s. If the clock runs out you miss a deadline: the page prints itself with the answers in grey, so you can learn them, and the clock resets. Miss 3 deadlines and the run is over.

The Headline is the longest word on the page. Set it cold for +500 more.

Proof reveals one letter of the selected word for −4 s and −100 points, up to 3 per page. A word with a revealed letter can no longer go cold.

An edition is 5 pages: a 4×4, two 5×5s and two 6×6s, with harder clues as you go. Each word scores 50 per letter (×3 cold), each page 200 × its number, and a full edition adds 10 per second left on the clock (if every page printed) and 500 per deadline left.

Keys: type letters · Backspace · Tab / Shift+Tab next and previous clue · Space switches across/down · Esc pauses · M mutes on menus · Enter presses Play.
